April 16, 2011 / arthill a good free editing program

If you have Photoshop Elements or Paintshop Pro you probably don’t need this free program.  If you own Photoshop but struggle with the learning curve or the sluggishness you may want to download this as a good lightweight alternative.  This is a step up from the simple tools you get with Picasa and Windows Live Photogallery.  The program originated as a college programming project to replace the woefully weak Paint program that came with Windows.  It has survived the test of time and continues to be supported by alumni.

Unlike most free programs this one supports layers and undo history.  It has a pretty full complement of tools and is fast.  You can read a review and down load it here;productListing

Here’s a screen shot. Notice that I am using the layers functionality and Multiply Blending mode to add punch to a Grand Canyon picture.  Some of you wanted to be able to do this trick I described in Quick Fix for a Flat Picture but didn’t have Photoshop Elements.

Thanks Art! I have learned SO MUCH from your blog entries. I really appreciate the time you take to share your knowledge of photography and tools. Please don’t stop! Maybe you could do a post on metering?
