Backing up your files

My friends over at 2guysphoto  posted a good article on backing up your photos at

http://2guysphoto.wordpress.com/2011/03/08/whats-your-backup-strategy/

I just wanted to write a brief post about a tool that I think you’ll find invaluable.  It’s called SyncToy and it’s a free program from Microsoft.  You can download it at

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=c26efa36-98e0-4ee9-a7c5-98d0592d8c52

I use this program nearly every day to backup files from the hard drive onto an external drive.  It’s fast and reliable.  I have been using it for years.  It has three modes

  • Synchronize: New and updated files are copied both ways. Renames and deletes on either side are repeated on the other.
  • Echo: New and updated files are copied left to right. Renames and deletes on the left are repeated on the right.
  • Contribute: New and updated files are copied left to right. Renames on the left are repeated on the right. No deletions.

I use Contribute to back up my pictures.

It comes in 64 bit and 32 bit versions.

Check it out.  You’ll be glad you did.

Art, thanks for the link back to 2 Guys Photo. I’ll try SyncToy this weekend. I’d been using another BU utility but it was unreliable, so this will be a welcome solution.
